wine. In the Middle East, ginger powder is used as a spice for coffee
and in the United States; Ginger is perfect to satisfy a sweet tooth
in gingerbread, ginger ale, and gingers snaps.
More commonly today, Ginger is used to improve digestion
and absorption of other foods. Ginger is a good source of Magnesium,
and in addition to that, Ginger has been used often for dyspepsia and
colic, to ease pain caused from arthritis, helping in blood thinning
and contains properties that are helpful in lowering cholesterol that
can help treat heart disease, It can be an effective treatment for nausea.
Ginger has shown evidence of aiding the movement of the gastrointestinal
tract and contains antibacterial, sedative, antipyretic, and analgesic
properties.
Turmeric
The Turmeric plant thrives in the wet, tropical regions
in Southern Asia, and is typically found in temperatures between 20
and 30 degrees Celsius. After the process of boiling and then drying
Turmeric in kilns, rhizomes are extracted from it, ground into a powder
and used as a spice and dye. Cur cumin, the active ingredient in Turmeric,
has a peppery flavor and smells like mustard. Turmeric is used in many
food products and can usually be found in curry powders through out
Asia and the South Pacific.
Turmeric has the ability to assist in circulation
and digestion. In India, it is used as an antiseptic to treat burns
and cuts. Many Ayurvedic doctors use Turmeric for its fluoride. Currently,
The United States National Institutes of Health is conducting four clinical
trials to find out if cur cumin is an effective treatment for pancreatic
cancer, Alzheimer's and colorectal cancer. Cur cumin has also been used
for thousands of years as an anti-inflammatory and can also be an effective
treatment for psoriasis. As a final point, Turmeric has demonstrated
some ability to help slow down the spread of some cancers.
Tulsi
Tulsi, or Tulasi is also known as “Holy Basil”,
is an aromatic plant and along with its many culinary purposes, has
spiritual importance as well. Many Hindus consider a house unfinished
without a Tulsi plant and some others even provide structural spaces
within the home uniquely for their Tulsi plant. Tulsi is also used to
make necklaces for adornment and beauty.
For its medicinal purposes, Tulsi has been known
to improve digestion and intestinal health. The plant's extracts are
also used in remedies for illnesses such as headaches, colds, heart
disease, inflammation, stomach ailments, and malaria. Recent studies
also suggest that Tulsi not only has many antioxidant qualities, but
may be an effective painkiller and may help reduce glucose and cholesterol
levels.
Schizandra
Chinese royalty and Daoist masters throughout history
consumed a special tonic made with Schizandra. The Schizandra berry
is well-known as a beauty mixture and is considered to be a youth preserving
herb. It is also said to be a powerful stimulant to the brain and is
believed in China to improve memory. For the body, it is known to improve
overall strength.
Schizandra may also help mental function and memory.
It is used in many tonic formulations as an astringent, while in traditional
Chinese medicine it is used to defy infections, augment skin health,
and fight insomnia, coughing, and thirst. Modern Chinese research also
suggests that Schizandra has a protective effect and may help people
with chronic illness.
Jujube
Jujube is a little tree or shrub with prickly branches,
green, glossy leaves and edible fruit that, when ripe, looks like a
date. Jujube fruit has been farmed for well over 4,000 years and can
grow in a wide range of temperatures—though hot summers are required
to successfully produce the fruit from this small tree.
Jujube is very high in vitamin C, and has been used
throughout history to calm nerves and relieve anxiety. By grinding the
fruit to a fine powder, small amounts can be used to quickly reduce
stress and purify the blood. In addition, the compound called Ziziphin
found in Jujube leaves can restrain the sweet taste in humans and Jujube
fruit helps sooth a sore or irritated throat.
Haritaki
There are seven types of Haritaki fruit, and they
all have their own unique look, flavor and benefits as well as anthraquinone-like
(laxative) chemicals, tannins and astringents. Haritaki fruit is part
of triphala, the three-fruit formula in the science of longevity from
India. It is generally administered in triphala form rather than by
itself to draw upon its tonic effects.
Haritaki has been shown to nurture tissues, predominantly
the heart, liver, and kidney. It is used to treat diseases of the eye
(both internally and externally). In addition, Haritaki, by blocking
the ability to utilize sugars, may help to remove bacteria and have
cholesterol-lowering traits.
